1972 450SL rusty gas tank...

I am exploring ways to clean and seal the gas tank on my sl, it set up for a year with 1|2 a tank of gas in it and rusted enough to now cause fuel starvation problems from the clogged screen at bottom of tank . Has anyone done this to one of these type tanks before? Looking thru the fuel sender mounting hole you can see a what appears to be a plastic baffle mounted on bottom of inside the tank? Is muriatic acid ( if I choose to use that) going to eat that up? From what I've read so far por15 fuel tank sealer is the way to go, as a lot of these products are bad about peeling off and causing even more problems. Tank is not to the point where it has pinholes, but bad enough to continue to have problems until it's sealed. Thanks alot!

Whatever way you go you are going to have to pull the tank.

If you have it redone by Gas Tnk Renu, it will be repaired, sealed and have a lifetime guarantee. 300 bucks. Cheap and good, considering what kind of adventure lasting months you could have. Just my two cents, but I did that.

If you choose to clean and seal yourself, don't forget that ALL the fuel and vent lines remain must be kept open.

POR-15 sells a gas tank repair kit which includes a cleaner and sealer. It's a bit of work if it's rusty in there, but works great.

Another vote for Renu. Had the tank in my ponton done about 15 years ago and still going strong.
