Have you heard of a sl diesel

That is my dream car or I think it could be. Has anyone heard of transplanting a turbo diesel from a MB into a 107. I love the sl style and it would be great to have a turbo / 4speed manual or 5speed manual in it to get great gas mileage and reliability. I don't mind loosing the speedy take off.
Maybe I am just dreaming or is it a nightmare. Found a 73 sl without motor for 1k. No smog needed for that model. Now I need a diesel. Let me know what you think. I drive my 380 sl daily to work.

If you daily an SL I can see it being nice. My convertibles have always been weekend cruisers with the girlfriend. So I'm all about quiet and smooth baby. And if I drive once every other week at most frequent the mileage doesn't matter. That's the conclusion I came to when I thought about this.

However since you daily an R107 that would probably be the best of both worlds, and perfect for your needs.

Hopefully someone comes up with that link.

I found info on the diesel forum. There is info about inserting a diesel in a 107

I recall seeing a 107 SL for sale in upstate NY somewhere - It had a 617 diesel.

Overall curb weight should not be a problem. Not sure how engine weights compare.

How about interference with oil pan? There is that subframe beam that goes across under 107 that prevents the oil pan from being removed.

ADDED: saw this post on another forum:

The r107 shares the same front suspension subframe as the old w115 -and that had the 617 in it.

It is a pretty easy swap, I researched this myself. Don't forget that the 560SL shares the engine with the SEL, which shares its chassis with the 617/603. The main problem with the 617 in a r107 chassis is that the front of the valve cover does not clear the hood. The only options in that case are to make a weird looking hood scoop or to drop the engine mounts (have seen both done, sorry I don't have links though). The more logical option would be to put an OM603 into it, which IIRC has no significant clearance issues but has more to swap over and isn't as simple as an OM617 (what is anyways??). I saw an OM603 r107 on ebay a few months back, there was a post in the diesel section about it.

No, only custom jobs.

"If MB offered SLs with turbodiesel power, I'd have owned one years ago."

I mentioned that to a friend while looking in the engine bay of a Pagoda SL at a local MB Club GTG. The Pagoda owner was within earshot and took offense to this. -Touchy-touchy......

603 would be the way to go, 602 if you needed more space.

I was out in Tucson, AZ a couple of weeks a go and drove a 1985 500SL with a 617 turbo installed. Belongs to a longtime family friend that has a garage full of W126 diesels and a W123 TD. Bought the car already converted from his mechanic, for his grandson.

Pretty nice installation, drove well, looked good, and you couldn't tell from the outside.....

Walter Klatt, who frequents the International Ponton Owners Group (IPOG) Yahoo group, has a 1967 230SL-diesel.

A 603 would be a serious power UPGRADE for a 380.

I do like my 380SL, but next to my two 87 300D, it is a serious dog everywhere in the powerband.
