Ignition Control Module 560SL 87

Ignition Control Module 560SL 87
I have been informed, after having replaced almost everthing but the engine, that my Ignition control module is bad. What gives? Any used ones available? 560 SL 1987
Part #?? 0227400693??

Thanks for your help

JD

Small world -- I just had mine replaced last week -- I got a new one installed at the dealership -- ouch -- but we had taken the car for a nice summer ride to a lake resort about 60 miles from the house -- the car acted a bit funny (stalled twice) but it started right up again. We found a place to park, enjoyed our visit for about three hours and returned to find that the car would not start. We called MB roadside assistance and the best they could offer was a tow (at our cost) to an MB dealership (from the time we discovered the car's condition until we got home that night was about 5 miserable hours). I chose the dealership closest to my home ($230 tow).

The dealership had a "donor" part that they keep to check the ICM of this era cars- my car started right up when they installed the donor -- so that was their diagnosis. They gave me a discount on a new part that they ordered from MBUSA (said they sold it to me at wholesale cost) and the actual labor was pretty cheap (after all the test was installing one of them and they did that pretty fast). They also fixed an electrical connection on my AC -- which was intermittant (and now blows cold)

I thought about looking for a used part, but some of them where still expensive -- and I kept thinking about how stupid it would be to have a used part fail (as there were no symptoms until failure) and be stuck somewhere again. If you are thinking of a non-new part I would suggest that you get a rebuilt part rather than just a used one. Otherwise, figure about $2400 for the part!

Good luck!

It's possible to get a spare on eBay at not-too-bad prices. I have the original P/N as a known good spare and another from a 420 SEL, which will probably work OK (internal map a little different). Beware that if yours goes bad, the coil probably shorted, so not changing the coil will blow up the new part. Also, using the heat sink material at the bottom of a new unit or replacing the old material is crucial for the long life of the replacement part.

Good Grief I almost passed out.
Is this the most expen$ive item in this car???

On my 86' 560 it is located behind the driver side headlight and with a good flashlight, mirror and careful reading I got the part number off of it. Which 004 545 55 32

Did an ebay search and found several. Some with different part numbers.

I think I may buy a spare to add to my "sitting in the box never know when you will need it alternator.
Sounds like good insurance if you can find a parts car with the right one in it.

Hi all.

Thanks for the updates. I received a used one #003 545 9132, out of a 560 SL. We'll install it tomorrow, and see if it takes care of all the problems. Coils etc have all been replaced. (AMM, Plugs, wires, this and that Fuel regulator....on and on) $5000+ in parts and labor over the last 6 months. I'll finish this thread this week.... hope hope!

JD Harriman,

Replaced mine with used a couple years ago after going through pretty much everything else. New was around $2000 then, and like you, found one on Ebay for around $50. Also keep a spare in the trunk just in case.

One important note. Did you apply a new coating of heat transfer paste before bolting it onto the fenderwell? The module uses the fenderwell as a heat sink, and from what I've read, you MUST use a heat transfer paste or the module can fail due to heat build-up. Do not use the paste that comes with other ignition modules as that paste actually blocks heat and does the opposite of what you want. Bought my paste at Radio Shack, where it is used on CPU heat sinks.

Paste

Hi
Thanks

We used the paste as per MB. It runs great, lots of power. Still need to fine tune at idle, but that will happen after I have put a few miles on it to settle everything in. (new fuel) as it has been in the shop/garage with the same fuel in tank for over 9 months. Any ideas as to what I need to fine tune it?
Anything unusual I can expect?

JD

Just a curious question> There is a replacement Ignition Control Unit manufactured by Huco and can be purchased for less than $60. I am considering getting one of these to replace (I think) my defective ICU> Why haven't any of you guys tried this cost effective unit? Does anyone have any experience with this OEM?

That unit may be for a pre-1986, which contains no microprocessor, ROM for a map, vacuum sensor, etc.

Thanks Strife. That may be the answer since I've searched for my MB, a '82 380SL. Still looking for comments from anyone who has used this Huco unit.
