The importance of vacuum!

This is one of those "please learn from my stupid mistake" threads.

We have a 380SL with about 110 K miles, original transmission. About a year ago the car developed a bad "slip" or flare when upshifting from second to third gear. Revs would spike a bit, hesitation on the shift etc.

Took it to my local indie (a good one), played with bowden cable, etc etc. Indie suspected a worn out clutch pack as the transmission was clearly abused when we bought the car - very dirty fluid and old old filter.

Well, when cleaning the ICV to try and sort out a high idle problem I discovered that a vac line going into one of the ICV rubber boots was disconnected. Lo and behold, shifting problem fixed! The line in question is hidden and only visible when you get ready to pull out the ICV.

Now I still have a high idle issue but that was the cheapest transmission repair of my life. Shifting beautifully now......

So check yer vac lines, mates!

I am having the same issue when the car shifts for the first few times. However, when I got my SL the fluid was clean with no OBVIOUS signs of abuse. Old guy drove it for a few years before I got it..anyway as the car shifts a few times it is less noticable..I would like to check my vac line in the same location as you mentioned. The problem is...I don't know what an ICV is or where it is located..help??

Idle Control Valve.

Half covered by the front of the air cleaner housing, between the warmup regulator and the distributor.
