74 450SL smokes on startup
My car has only recently started puffing out a small amount of blue/white smoke on inital startup. The exaust smell when running is oil,not fuel. The last car I had that did this(V8 Ford) was caused by valve stem seals allowing oil into the cylinder.
I'm not that up to speed on the internals of the early mercedes V8.Could this be the problem or something else altogether. My hydrocarbon and CO readings are not too bad.CO is at about 0.25 and HC is at about 120PPM at 25 MPH under load. The engine has 183K and to the best of my knowledge has not had any internal "overhaul" done to it.It starts easily, idles at about 700rpm and drives great.(rare for an original D-jet!) It's about due for an oil change so that's the first thing on my agenda.Would it even be worthwhile to try additives to either swell old seals or a thickiner like STP to try and seal better? |

you are probably correct. If she sits and then blows smoke on start up, you may have one or more seals leaking. Another diagnostic is if the smoke is not there under load and worse with warm restarts
