steering wheel removal

My 85 SL has a 10 millimeter bolt in the center of the steering wheel. Does it have a right hand thread or left? I tried using a 1/2" impact driver with 500 ft/lbs and the bolt would not budge. Any ideas to remove stubborn bolt without damage?

Lefty-loosey!

It is "glued" with red thread locker. You will need to apply heat, in all probability. Navigate to http://www.rmsmithco.com for information

Cheers!

That seems like an inordinate amount of force.

I've been able to break all of mine with a standard 1/2 breaker bar.

It is a right hand thread, so CCW will loosen the bolt.

Make certain that when you are applying this torque, that you have relieved the strain on the steering column lock. I use a stout pipe pushed through the steering wheel spokes and held against the rocker panel.

Leave the ignition key in the #1 position and give her a tug!

Jim

I am with Jim on this one, I have not met one I could not take off. Make sure all play is blocked with a strut of sorts and use the breaker bar. Some PB blaster may help

Not to be contrary, but if the wheel has not ever been removed, or if it has and replaced per factory spec, it will have red thread locker on it. The bolt is "micro encapsulated", to use MB-Speak. Brute force has worked for folk in the past, but why risk it?

Judicious application of heat melts the thread locker, and the bolt removes with less force...

Excellent advice about the key and scotching the wheel... Some have turned the wheel fully to the left and let steering geometry hold, while others have used wood props and pipe, as reported in this thread. Regardless, DO NOT RELY ON THE STEERING COLUMN LOCK!

I'm with Dugald & Walrus... Use heat to melt the loctite.

I've read of a couple of owners who have stripped out the allen bolt before resorting to heat.
