For Sale 1991 300SL in Columbus, Ohio

I am selling my well maintained, 1991 300SL Automatic with 73,406 miles asking $10,800.00 USD. The color is Pueblo Beige with a matching hard top and dark brown leather interior and the original dark brown soft top. The car is being sold as is with no warranties. The buyer is responsible for any taxes and shipping which are not included in the above price.

I am the second owner of this SL which I purchased in 2001 with 43,575 miles from Crown of Dublin, Ohio. The original local owner purchased the SL from Ed Potters and traded in at Crown of Dublin, Ohio on a new SL.

I have performed all scheduled maintenance and performed repairs as needed. I have kept a log and the receipts of all services and repairs performed since I owned the SL.

The plastic window in the soft top has a crack but the window is clear. All other systems and components are fully functional and in very good condition with normal wear. The AC has been converted to R134. The original manuals, tools, and first aid kit are included. The spare tire is original and has never been used.

Feel free to send me a private message if interested.

I have not received any interest or comments on the sale of my SL.

I would be interested in feedback and thoughts from the forum.

You are right about that.

I am in no hurry to sell the SL.

Thanks.

Nice Ride

Phil Here, Very nice SL, I might add a very unusual color combo. I never saw a color coded dash and steering wheel before?

Good luck on the sale of this nice automobile, All SL's of this generation will always be worth at least 10 grand and if you take any less I will come by a slap you hands.................................

I've been watching the R129 market for a while, and I'm not sure it supports your assertion.

First, the economy has caused the market for toys to tank.

Second, whilst most of us here on the list consider a 20 year old car to be daily transportation, we represent only a sliver of the buying public. And, being aware enthusiasts, we tend to resist spending top dollar for a car. For most, this car is a toy, and an expensive toy to maintain.

Third, it's a 300SL. The six trades at a healthy discount to the 500SL. Drive both back to back and you'll see why.

Fourth, low mileage SLs are not uncommon.

Fifth, the car has lived it's life in a salt enviornment. Maybe I can be convinced that it is not rusty, but I'm going to assume there's corrosion on it to some degree.

Sixth, it's not a desirable color combination.

Seventh, an original 20 year old top is not going to be in the best of shape, even if it is cosmetically nice, the stitching still ages, and the windows still harden. I've had two cars with "perfect" original tops that quickly deteriorated once they were exercised for a while.

I'm not trying to slam your car, from the small pics I see, it looks quite nice. I just don't see the price as realistic for the market, if you need to sell the car. If you're not in a hurry, you might eventually connect with the person who is looking for this color combination and is willing to pay a premium for your car. I'd suggest posting it on eBay to get a feel for the actual market and how it values your car. If you're set on the price, place a reserve on the car. Either way, you'll get a good idea of the market.

Good luck,

Jim

Jim,

So your saying you would like to by the Sl??? Just kidding!

Majority of 300SL's on ebay at this time are offered at around 10K.

Tell me about your 250C. My first Benz was a 250 sedan. I always likes the coupe.

Dan,

I'd love to own your R129 SL!

But I already have one, my 84 280SL (shows I'm not biased against 6 cylinder SLs).

I was seriously considering the R129 series until I fell into a too good to pass up W124 cabriolet.

BTW, my first MB was a 59 190SL, and I bought many parts for it from Skip Potter at Ed Potter MB back in the early seventies. Potter was also the Renault dealer back then.

My 250C was restored in the early nineties, and could use a few cosmetics. Still runs like a train, Chuck Taylor recently redid the head for me. Have a NOS true dual exhaust that Joe Alexander made up for me a while back. Love the black on black color, but wish it had a sunroof!

Regards,

Jim

Jim,

Old names from the past here in the Columbus Benz world.

Ed Potter MB sold out to Germain. I have not seen Joe Alexander for a couple of years.

I bought a 1964 230SL from Potter that I really liked to drive.

Back in the early 80's we belonged to the MB club and attended a number of track events. I remember a follow named Norbert from VA that had a blue hot rod 250 sedan.

The weird track time was when we went to Charlotte Motor Speed with our 300 Turbo Diesel!!!!

I just purchased a 2-owner 500SL, 100k miles, garaged for 14 years and a sun-belt car, all records, new soft top, rebuilt trans, all top hydraulics replaced, original paint, new AC evaporator.......and a host of other common issues addressed.

Price? $8k. Asking $10k, you really don't want to give up that car .

Will,

Sounds like your Sl was rode hard and put away wet during its life but you got a good deal. Enjoy your SL.

You need to think about having all of the rubber flexible brake lines and rubber fuel pressure lines replaced if they were not part of the other common issues.

Rode hard? lol,it's mint. I think 95k of hauling a 4100lb car with 322hp is pretty god for a trans. That's a lot of mass and a lot of power going through that tranny for 2 decades, even with "normal" driving. I've always understood one of the top 3 rules of old Benz convertibles is make sure the top has been replaced if it's 15plus years old, and you are looking to buy. I've never driven a more solid decade-plus old Benz, and I've driven a lot of them! $9100 is the end of the spectrum for pricing on mint examples of 92 model V8s, Yours is a year older and a 6 cylinder. I think a fair price is $7k, but it's not my car and none of my business. All depends on how anxious you are to sell it I guess

FYI, mine sat on the consignment lot for 8 months before I found it. There is no market for these cars right now. Good luck with the sale.
