Hey there. I have a 1990 model SL500 that i need a little help with. I need to remove the factory radio, but i cannot seem to locate the tools, or even a picture of them so that i could make them. Can anyone offer any help?

My second issue is my drivers side window when i shut the door the back of the window on the top edge hits my softtop when i shut it. If i lower the window a 1/4 inch, it shuts fine. I have tried searching but have found nothing definite on if my car has the windows that drop a bit when you open and shut the door. or if not, how do i adjust them to be just a bit lower. Thank you so much for the help

You can buy the radio tools on eBay cheap. It is possible to make them with coat hanger, but just buy a set as you'll need them again in the future.

The window is adjustable. You can take off the door panel and adjust up/down/left/right of the glass. You loosen a screw and make the adjustment, then tighten.

Your glass does NOT drop when the door opens. That was in the newer versions of your model (R129) but in 1990 they hadn't implemented that feature yet.

You need to look at the original service manual (WIS) and there are a couple of documents showing how to adjust the glass.

Make sure your door is aligned properly before you start to mess with the glass. These are big heavy doors and they can sag or come out of adjustment. You may need a hinge or striker adjustment, not a glass adjustment.

Look at the beltline (chrome strip) along the top edge of the door. Use a straightedge -- does it exactly line up with the strip rearward of the door? If the door strip is lower, you need to adjust the striker.

Once the door is aligned, then adjust the glass.

Door is more likely to go out of adjustment than the glass.

You can get DIN picks at any auto store, or any auto stereo store. I think I bought some at autozone for ~$3.

If the vehicle still has the original Becker Radio, the DIN wire tools from the auto store aren't correct. The radio is held in by two "latches" along the bottom. The proper tool looks more like a putty knife. Do a search in the "Car Audio..." section of the forum. If you are skillfull, you can get the radio out without the special tool.

Wow thank you all for such thorough responses. My first orde of buisness must be the window as now I must manually let it down a bit then raise it again. it is the original radio and I am really wanting one with a cd player a mine just has a tape deck. However I was reading online that I must have some amp adapter for another radio to work.
Otherwise I love the car. I am the second owner and it currently has 52k miles on it. All black wig grey int.

The "radio" in that vehicle is located in several places. What you see in the console is only the tape player and the control head. The actual radio chassis is in the trunk on the left side fender near the radio antenna. Cables run back from the control head to the radio. The radio in the trunk has the power amps for only the mid range and tweeter speakers. The higher power amp for the woofers is under the right front seat. Nothing is simple in a Mercedes. So putting in an after market receiver requires at the least, rewiring the speakers and running the antenna wire to the console area.

I must have gotten off easy somehow????? i pulled the head unit out and it was just like any other unit almost. had the antenna plugged into the back of it. the front speaker wires were connected like normal to it, then it had differant wires leading from it to an amp for the others. so i put in the new radio like normal connecting the power and ground with the supplied wiring adapter, and for the rear i used the SOEM-4 and hooked up to the wires going to the amp (took the rear wire leads from the new HU and hooked them to this little SOEM-4 box, then it had output wires that i hooked to the existing wires leading to the amp) and bingo everything worked out great and sounds great!
