560SL owners, am I missing something here?

The pic is of the area to the right of the left hand side headlight on a 1987 560SL, just finished cleaning out a bunch of dirt that had come in via the lower opening over the years and am wondering if something should be mounted here to block the stuff? The upper opening leads to the tube leading to the air filter so am sure that one should be left unblocked.
