83 380SL Driveline R&R (Flex Disc confusion)
Greetings, New guy here. I'm hoping to get some advice on proper flex disc installation. I'm currently rebuilding the driveline on my 380sl in what started as a center support bearing inspection quickly escalated into a new support bearing and housing, u-joint, centering sleeve, tranny mount, and 2 new flex disc. During reassembly of the flex disc, after the bolts were installed and tightened and the raised bosses on the flex disc seated in the counter bore of the yokes I observed a gap between the face of the flex disc and the face of the yokes of between .030-.040". I don't recall seeing any space between the flex disc and yoke when the old parts were removed. I'm now unsure if the flex disc are defective (height of bosses to tall to allow yoke to seat flat against flex disc) or if the gap between flex disc and yoke is correct and the only point of contact is where the bosses seat into the yokes. Any info on this will be greatly appreciated.
Thanks, Dave |

I just did this on my 85 380SL and I don't recall any gap as you describe.
What brand of flex disc did you use? (and was it German?)

The sleeves for the bolts on the flex disc should have exposed shoulders that fit into matching depressions on each of the metal pieces. You may have the disc backwards, or turned. A VERY thorough discussion and record of installations is here: http://www.benzworld.org/forums/r-c107-sl-slc-class/1452162-flex-disc-info.html.
I "risk" mentionong another forum, but the information is too important to NOT give you. Scott

Thanks for your replies. The pics shows the gap between flex disc and yoke that I was concerned about. I did locate a cross section drawing of the assembly in an MB 107 service library disk that shows a gap between disc and yoke with the raised sleeves of the flex disc fully seated into the bore on the yoke. It would appear that the space between the flex disc and yoke that I am seeing is correct, based on the drawing. This is an area that I don't want any doubts about. Any thoughts or opinions is appreciated. Thanks, Dave

The second photo shows quite a gap that would make me suspicious. What brand are these flex discs?

Looks to me like the washer is located in the wrong position...

Now that I look at the 1st photo, I see a big gap there as well, but I don't think what is showing between the flex disk and the yoke is a washer. It looks more like the sleeve, but I may be wrong.
In any case, the washers are supposed to be mounted between the disc and the head of the bolt (3 on one side) and between disc and the nut (3 on the other side), just as depicted in the diagram.
