1985 500sl air pump seized
I believe the air (smog) pump is seized on my 500sl(euro). I have attached a photo. I removed the belt which was pretty well chewed up. In searching, I am not finding a replacement. Can this be easily
repaired ? If so, where do I look for parts or a place to repair? I understand I can remove it completely. If so, do I leave the hose on and block it off or remove the hose and block off? I also found the air pump filter is missing. It may be my imagination but the car seems to run better without the pump working. Any help, suggestions are appreciated. Thanks for bearing with my ignorance. bill

If your local/state smog laws do not require it for the safety inspection sticker take it off and dump it. It's only function is for cold engine start up; after engine warms up all it does is put a drag on the engine. It looks like your car is a euro 500SL so the pump looks like an after though installation to satisfy EPA importation rules.

I removed the one on my 500SL along with all associated plumbing and brackets. I have a short section of hose plugged where it attaches to the block.
The pump on mine was a Ford model. If removed you can install the original washer bottle and system. |

^^ I would love to do this surgery at the first hint of an excuse, particularly if there was a way to remove/truncate/block off those annoying logs at the injectors. Can that be done safely/easily?
