Oil Temperature Sender Leak

The oil temperature sender on my 81 380sl is leaking, and I was wondering whether it was the sender itself or, maybe, a seal ring.

So I went to the MB EPC, which does show a seal ring along with a footnote 14 which reads exactly like this:

Footnote Description
014 Up to Engine
014 962 023639
014 963 042755

Does this mean that only engines between 962 023639 and 963 042755 have the seal ring, or does it mean that engines up to 963 042755 have the seal ring, and since my engine is # 960 12 006209, it doesn't have one?

Thanks in advance for the help.

Hey there mbboy,

First off, I think you mean oil pressure sender instead of oil temperature sender, but oh well.

As for the footnote, it is referencing two configurations of engines, the 962 and 963 configurations. It is saying the ring is used on configuration 962 from engine serial number 000001 to 023639 and configuration 963 from engine serial number 000001 to 042755.

Your engine is 960 12 006209. That is engine configuration 960, automatic transmission (12), and serial number 006209. So the footnote 014 does not apply to your engine configuration. Either a seal ring is not used, or more likely, there is another part number in the EPC list with or without a footnote that applies to you engine.

Thanks very much for clarifying the footnote, KCM. However, the car does have an oil temp sensor (part #005 545 5824), as well as an oil pressure sensor, and the same footnote appears next to the temp sensor on the entry for the 960 engine, even though that must be the correct sensor for that engine?

In any case, if I'm not mistaken, the temp sensor ties the firing rate of the frequency valve to the oil temperature in some way that others here may be able to clarify. But thanks again for the footnote clarification.

Regards,

Mbboy
