air conditioner conversion?
I have a 1973 450 sl with some leaks in the air conditioner hoses. One mechanic has strongly advised to keep the r12 system, and another has strongly advised to convert it to r134. Any thoughts? Also, the estimates I've gotten for changing the hoses and drier are from about $1,000 to $1700. Any thoughts on this; can I get it done cheaper? I know there would be some under dash work, which is time consuming. Thanks

For what it's worth, I converted a R12 system to R134a on an 88 Saab 900.

I had a bad compressor and no R12. So I got a new 134 compressor for +/- $325. I was told to get a new dryer & expansion valve. I removed all of the hoses and replaced every o- ring. I flused the hoses & remain reused parts. The entire project was $375. The system, in my opinion, take just a few more minutes to get just as cold as the r12.
After completion I was told new 134 sized lines would help the efficency, and there's a product that people claim to have luck with to flush the system and avoid removing and replacing every o-ring. With 134, if it leaks it's no big deal.
