2000 sl500 lowering
I have a client that would like to lower their 2000 sl500 about an inch.
Suggestions on the project are welcome. They have 18" wheels installed. |

I replaced the front coil springs on my 83 280SL with 450SLC springs after cutting 2 coils off them. It dropped the front end by the wanted 2" and stiffened up the ride. Further to that, it greatly reduced the weight transfer between front and back thus reducing the amount of squat on acceleration. My goals acheived.

Well, then, you have the option of cutting.
I did a lot of research before attempting this. First of all, the 107 series had a long run with many variations. Thus there are numerous spring for that model to choose from or compare to. Different lengths, wire diameter etc. Also the shape of this particular spring at the ends lends itself to be cut. Once cut, it seats nicely. After all the mathematical calculations were done, it was determined that one coil removed would suffice. Wrong. After installing them and dropping the car, it had only dropped 1/2 inch! So much for grade 11 math! So in my case, 2 coils on this particula spring did the trick. And then an alignment of the front end was done. PS Aftermarket springs were / are available...but they are pricey. I got my "new" springs for the price of shipping from a member's parts car.

I got that.
I was just relating MY experience... which can be an option for you. Ignore my posts if nothing I said applies.

a move back to 16" rims with same profile tires as now will result in 1" lower stance... Cheap and easy, without any modifications to the suspension.

It came with 17" rims. She didn't like the looks and got 18" from a r230. Now too much wheel well is visable..
I've found after market springs that offer -1.5" for 1990-1996 sl. Can see why these can't be used? Use the 3-tit spring pads to keep it around -1".. |
