Since it been awhile and while I'm here.....

I've had this intermittent hum at idle. Sounds like someone blowing steady air over the top of a Coke bottle. Sometimes quite loud. Depress the accelerator and the sound goes away. From time to time I've tried to track it down but no luck. Anyway, today I removed the vacuum line that goes to the check valve on top of the charcoal canister. The sound stopped. Plugging the vacuum line does nothing. plugging the check valve or reattaching the line the sound comes back. I guess this was part of the emissions. What are the ramifications of leaving the line disconnected or I should say what is the proper solution?
Thanks
Marc
