She is for Sale 72 450SL
After much soul searching ,the time has come. I am officially offering PEARL, my 72 450SL for sale. ( build date (10/71). I believe all of you know her well (vicariously through this forum), so I am asking you fine folks to spread the word. If you know some one looking for an early 70’s model, this is the one, turn key operation, impeccably maintained, full service records. Djet system/injectors all refurbished, and in fine shape. Only issue is a non functioning AC system. It is all there, I just never have used it . I believe it just needs charged. New tires, calipers, brakes all the way around and just needs her spring tune up . Hard top included of course. Soft top is new, absolutely no issues. Everything is in great shape, no rust, perfect underbody, near perfect paint. Interior is leather and is flaw free. Period correct, with just a few minor modifications. She does sport an very well done and fitted dash cap. . Multiple awards at shows, and a Concurs participant at Keeneland , Kentucky

Beautiful car, where are you headed next? 113?
Where did you find the chrome exhaust tips? I rather like those.

I've always liked Pearl...I'll miss her postings! I've always been curious why it's not a 350SL if it's a 1972 (USA Model)? I know the USA 1972 is a 4.5 in disguise, but usually has the 350SL badge. If I know of anyone looking, I'll let them know!

I think you'd do better calling it by its real name, and making it clear that it's a U.S. version 4.5 liter 117 motor. People who know these cars know the 1972 story. In any case good luck with it.

Yes and either is correct. Legend has it the 350SL badge was change to 450SL by dealers in many cases.

Cars don't have two correct names. A rebadge is a rebadge, and an act of illusion, whether performed by a dealer or someone else. I have all the magazine articles from that era. At no time was a 1972 U.S. 107 ever called a 450SL.

Why oh why are you selling? She's got to be a keeper - must be.
If you are bored and you now want a fin tail why not buy a rot box - that'll keep you busy and Pearl will keep you happy.

From looking at Ron's 220 thread, I suspect that like me, he gets a lot of his pleasure through the journey and not just in the destination. I hope that he finds a new project to inspire us with.

Who says it can be referred to as both now? I missed that official proclaimation. Actually it's a 350SL - that's the way it was titled and badged. But my point was, which was just an opinion, that when you're selling a nice example at a hopefully premium price, probably to a knowledgeable collector or enthusiast, you're likely better off with the correct badging. On the other hand if you were selling a $2500 clunker out of a trailer park you might be better off with the "450SL" misbadge. It's the 350SL badge that sets car apart from the 73-80s, which are pretty much the riff-raff of the 107s.

I recall reading somewhere that some of the 350SL's were rebadged at the dealers as 450SL's before they were sold to the first customers.
