'75 450SL engine availability
Well, we've decided to keep the 450SL we bought last November. Mainly, because nobody wants it at any price~! Engine is a bit tired, low compression in two cylinders. Anyway, other than that, it starts right up, idles great, suspension is nice and tight, minimal rattles, brakes work great, body is very straight, nice paint, once it warms up, minimal smoke out back.
Have a line on an engine, but it's 600 miles away! Friend of a friend kind of deal, and he tested the compression, and it's right up there. Whatever right up there means! I can get the engine and tranny for free. I'm a good wrench, have a car lift and tranny lift to assist in the transplant. However, we're under a time constraint from moving back to WI from our new place in AZ, the engine is in NM. Are these engines rare? Or, easy to find? I"m not into tearing it apart and rebuilding it. I have two Porsche 924 turbo projects underway that need finishing. Thanks. Dave.

When were you trying to sell it, and what asking price? Location matters, of course... I would think yours would sell for around $2000 plus/minus, given the stated condition. Rust is the usual killer.

Thanks for the info. Car is currently in Prescott, AZ. Wife originally wanted 4500 for it, after she spent 10 hours detailing the outside and inside of the car! I'm thinking more like 2500, new battery, new tires. No rust except, a hole in trunk right above the muffler. Here's a pic of it:

There's one close to me for $100, but that's not going to help. They must be out there, especially in the rust belt.

yeah, we'll make a decision on the free engine soon. Probably go back that way on the way back to Wisconsin. Ran the car up to temp, and on a lark turned on the A/C. ICE COLD~!

I'm in Desert Hills an Hour South of you off the 17, for a steal I could deal with another Pain in the a** as long as the engine was part of the deal... AND maybe the lift and trans jack!!

I presume you want to drive the SL north?
Put the free engine on a pallet and ship it to Wisconsin. That will be cheaper and faster than finding another motor. If you are trailering the car, then pull the motor, put in the new one and if you don't have it reconnected, well, who cares since you're trailering the car. Lastly, if you car has those reactor exhaust manifolds, this engine swap is a great opportunity to remove them. You will need a fresh set of manifolds and new down pipes for the exhaust. -CTH |

Big problem I have, I don't care much for this car. It's beautiful, wifey has always wanted one, the key ingredient to dilemma. I'm more into our P-car collection. I understand the CIS system in the 924 turbo cars real well I'd rather work on them than the 450. I have to decide on trailer space between the 450SL and my '85 Porsche 911. If any of you have ever been in SW Wisconsin, the Mississippi River bluff country, where we live, has hundreds of miles of twisty roads. Perfect for the 911.
On the way home, wife drives the '86 Mercedes 300SDL, I drive the diesel truck/trailer combo platter.

I see what YOU wanted to sell her for, subtract all the hassle and PM a good deal, you can deal with it for 1 more hour and leave with cash!

Grenadiers,
If you don't keep the car, I am interested in the NM engine you mentioned as I live in ABQ. Would your friend entertain a sale to a neighbor from this forum?
