Smile 1981 380SL Transmission problems.......

Need some advice from the experts please.........

My transmission started slipping......changed out fluid and put in new filter......along with Lucas additive.

It continued to slip....to the point now where it will not budge an inch forward.......but you can back up (in reverse) from here to california if you so desired......strong enough to smoke the tires on asphalt.

I am mechanically inclined...... but I know absolutely NOTHING about automatic trannys......do any of you gents have any advice on what to check first....or do I just go ahead and start saving my pennies for a total rebuild ??

Thanks in advance,

Doug

A B2 piston failure has these symptoms. Lots of info on the diesel forum if scant info on the SL forum.

I agree. I think the '81 had the 722.3xx ( 6 bolt oil pan) so if it did, that's likely your problem. Not too hard or costly to fix.
