Shifter

I am a new 1980 450SL owner, had it for a while (barn find) but just started playing with it. It's a beast but after a new timing chain (old one had 15 degrees of stretch between cams!) and a thorough cleaning / rebuild of the fuel system it is a beautiful runner.

Trans seems to be a bit different than I am used to. It has no brake lock (I can pull out of park without depressing the brake). Is this correct?

Shifter is also very vague. Shifter bushings, maybe linkage. Seems to have alot of play, almost have to overshift to get it into the position I am seeking.

Any advice?

Also any advice on good electronic service manuals? I have a 124 MB cd that is pretty good.

Thanks!

Bryan

My 560 has no brake lockout either. I don't think these cars were equipped with one.

I would check the shifter bushings first. They are a very common failure item on these cars. Mine were completely missing. I installed new bushings and the selector works perfectly now.

I bought a service manual CD on E-Bay, but there is one online too on the other site. Good luck with your car.

Thank you sir!

Did you get the MB cd? Do you like it? The other site has a manual online?
That is good to know.

Thanks Rowdie - I use the EPC for parts all the time, but never looked for manuals!

I have heard that the online manual is not as complete as the CD. The CD is also handy if you work on your car in an area with no internet access.

I can't seem to find anything related to the transmission in the online manual. Was hoping to find shifter bushing R&R

As far as I know, there's nothing about transmissions in any of the commonly available manuals.

The bushings are fairly easy to replace and you will understand it once you get under the car and see the linkage. There a couple of clips that are a little tough to reinstall, but you can do it.

It was easier for me to remove the linkage arm from the trans and install the bushing on the bench. You should also be aware that there are special pliers available for installing the bushings. I didn't know about them when I replace mine, but I will have a set if I ever have to do it again.

Transmission manuals

Check these guys out. I got the manual for the 722.3 transmission in my 380SL and it is very helpful.

He has the 722.1 transmission. The ATSG manual is out of print. Army did a HUGE breakdown of the 722.1 on the diesel discussion side, back late last year, if you want to see how it ticks.

P R N D 2 L Window

Is the window (clear plastic) available ? I could not find a part number for it.
Mine was broken an scratched....might be able to repair but may be easier
to replace.

Got the bushings in the mail, had to buy the two small ones from the dealer but for $10, this is going to be a very high impact repair....should bring the user interface back to new car feel....that's always nice.
