1990 300sl hard top issue

hello,
i searched the topics about the top problems but can't find this. is there a way to manually unlock the rear hard top latches? i see the slots in the trunk liner and what look to be some sort of tabs, but i can't figure it out. i don't have the tool kit as i did read about a tool that needs to be used. any help would be appreciated

For online owners manuals, check here. The Mercedes-Benz R129 SL (1990 - 2002)

From what I recall, the tool consists of a 10 or 13 mm long thin open end wrench on one end that operates the rear latches and a allen on the other to operate the front.

I've seen the instructions for manual soft top operation but, not hard top release from the trunk. Take a look for actuators for sale and you might be able to get a better picture on how to manually operate them.

It's the same as the soft top. Same latches. Stick the wrench vertically into the slats with the red ends, under the caps in the trunk cover, and rotate upward once iirc.

Don't forget to undo the rear defroster cable before you do this! I'm lucky I didn't break mine when I forgot

awesome~manual details the procedure perfectly, and i had a VERY thin 10mm wrench that fit the tabbed lever perfectly. thank you both for the input. now i get to go practice equine therapy in 98 degree, 90% humidity and do the top when i get home, Lord willing
