107 Blower question

On my 72 350SL, the blower motor came loose and the casing was damaged. I am in process of attempting a repair, but it is not going as well as I would like! The motor and brushes are fine.

I have been offered the casing out of a 380SL.

My question is - does anyone know if there is any difference in the casing used on an early 80's 380SL as compared with an early (72) 350/450SL?

I know there are differences in part number. The early SLs had removable metal impellers (cages) while on later cars they are plastic. There are also differences in the blower control (resistor) and the connector. But it is just the casing I am interested in and there are no part numbers for just that.

when I parted out the 82 380 I was amazed at how much was the same, I do believe IIRC that the blower motor size was the same, that would lead me to think the case would be the same. Then again you and I know with these old MB's they are not always logical

Yes, that is why I was asking.

I did get the repair job done. It is not pretty! But the motor is now firmly in place. I used a combination of nuts and bolts, 2.5oz fibreglass mat, JB WEld, plastic cable ties and .... Well you get the idea. The Brits call it the belt and suspender approach. Fix it one way but add another and perhaps even another just in case the first (or second) doesn't hold

I do know for sure that a 79 450 blower motor casing is the the same as a 72 350 blower motor casing, it did have the plastic fans but the metal ones in my 350 fitted right in.

Good luck

Thanks for input.

As it is, I fixed the broken casing and have the blower back in car. Not a pretty repair, but it seems solid and blower is quieter than ever.

Graham,

If you decide to replace your blower casing, I have 2 spares on hand. I'll take a look at them next time I go to the storage garage. PM me for pictures if you would like to see them.
