Instrument Cluster Removal
You need two of Mercedes tool 140 589 02 33 00 to remove the instrument cluster. The dealer charges about $20 for a pair. One is pictured below. Alternatively, you could probably fashion your own from a wire coathanger or similar, but the Mercedes tool is sturdy and yet has a bit of flex which helps in the final removal of the cluster.
To remove the cluster, you slide the end of each tool between the instrument cluster and the dash with the hooks facing upward or downward (of course). Then you turn your tools 90 degrees so that the hooked end of each tool faces inward. Now slowly pull back on the tools until you feel them catch the back of the grooved outer edges of the cluster. Finally, pull back and slightly outward on both tools to remove the cluster. It may require considerable tugging to remove the cluster since it fits so snugly into the dash. You pull slightly outward on the tools during removal to help ensure their hooked ends remain engaged in the back of the cluster. |
