Hi Surfer !

Depends of your vision !!
If you prefer to have a newer and a "litle more economic" car than 500 SL, you can take a 320 SL 96/97.

But if you prefer the tradition of SL V8 Engines, more powerful, and more value when you intend to sale your car, take the 500 SL !!

This is my opinion !!

Good luck and take care men!

A freind of mine bought a '96 320SL about a year ago. Before Christmas I bought a '90 500SL. Once he drove mine, at half the price, he was so utterly dejected that he sold his 320 and bought an E300Turbodiesel.
The 320 V6 makes a nice BMW straight six type of noise, but it's not in the 500's league at all. You just can't beat the grumble of that V8 first thing in the morning. It makes me smile every day. By the way, I've driven many 500 saloons over the years and was not prepared for the difference in SL guise. Different tuning, whole different ballgame. Great fun.

I prefer the V8 (already have two MBs with the 6-cylinder), but here in the USA, gas (petrol) is far cheaper than abroad...

...if fuel cost is of no concern, then go for the 500SL...
