Aftermarket Aluminum Condenser vs OE copper?

The condenser on my 380sl is leaking, and I have to replace it. So I was wondering whether there's a big difference between the cooling capacity of the OE condenser and the newer aluminum units.

A company near me showed me an aluminum Silla that I can buy for around $100, but it is about 1/2 the thickness and weight of my condenser. However, the guy's telling me that its cooling capacity is as good, if not better than the OE.

Is that true, possible, or wrong?

Thanks in advance for the info.

If the aluminum unit has flat tubes ( modern ) it likely has better cooling than the round tube type. But, there is no way to tell if this specific unit is better or worse.

Thanks. I came across this article that explains the differences pretty well:

If it fits like the Silla replacement radiators run. '84 380SL Radiator Replacement - Benzworld.org - Mercedes-Benz Discussion Forum

It's funny that you referenced this thread. One of the reasons I considered a Silla condenser is that I put a Silla radiator in my 380 in 2007, and it cools as well as the OE. Plus, all the fittings were correct. So, I'm not sure why they weren't on the radiator discussed in the referenced thread.

The only difference in the Silla and the OE was that the Silla wasn't quite as wide. So, I had to insert a few shims in the channels that hold it in place. But that wasn't a real problem.

Glad to hear a good experience. He may have received the wrong part. Isn't it aluminum with plastic tanks?
