Stall condition 1989 560SL

Good Morning All,

Have a small issue.

The other day my car died on me. Seems like it is running out of fuel.

Will fire up and idle for a bit then die out. The fuel pumps fire up....

I'm thinking fuel filter since it hasn't been changed in quite a while.

If the car sets for a couple of days it will run for a while then die out. Can't drive down the street without dying out.

Opinions Please and Thanks

Could be a bad ignition switch , could be the fuel pump relay. "tecqboy" is a good source for a lot more info.

Thanks for the reply.

The car dies out slowly, not like the fuel pumps stop or the relay quits. Not sure about the ignition switch but I would think it would cut out quickly.

I had this condition many years back and what happens is that the fuel filter is filled with sediment. After you fire up the car (It ususally starts), not immediately but shortly thereafter it will begin to lose rpm and die out. This is because the sediment in the filter begins to move around and plug up.

Anyone else have any ideas????

Thanks

Could be fuel starvation. If it was my car, the first thing I would do is replace the fuel filter. They can get plugged up. While under there, I would make sure both fuel pumps are actually running. On mine one was dead. Didn't affect the running of the car, but maybe on yours it would. Would think a dead pump would cause a lot of restriction, especially if the other is weak.

Never been in the tank, but if there is a screen inside, could also be plugged. And as a long shot, might check the fuel hoses back by the pumps, expecially out of the tank, to make sure none are getting sucked shut due to a weak wall on the hose.

qsprn &KCM,

Thanks for the repsonses.

Replaced the fuel filter today and the car runs great!!!!

Waiting for the new fuel pumps. It's been about 8 yrs since I installed the last set so I think I will try and stay ahead with some preventative mntc.

Appreciate your input.
