New Cylinder NOW, before it reaches the point where it won't turn at all.

It's a minor job right now, but when it reaches the point where it absolutely won't turn, it is a major job.

Yep, do it right away because if it does jam, it's a big effort to fix that requires a hack saw.

Oook then do I replace just the lock cylinder or the whole assembly that attaches to the coulum and is that part available here or at the dealer only thanks

I just went through this with my 500SL. Pull the tumbler now while you can. Instructions are in the on line service manual.
Replace the tumbler assembly. No longer available keyed to the VIN on yours. New tumbler will come with new key.

Google Mercedes 1164620279. The current MSRP is $184.00. Unknown if all of the responses are accurate. I bought from the Classic Center. Paid more than some of the after market vendors but didn't want to chance it.

Talked to the nice man at the dealer.said I should buy the tumbler and the switch ass. To total cost just under 500- .do I need to buy both thanks for all the help

You only need the tumbler, dealer can order it matched to your vin # for under $100. It's a DIY job and there are lots of how to on youtube

Good luck!

Classic Center advised keyed to VIN is NLA. This was on my '84 500SL. I was able to get one keyed to VIN on my '86 560SL. Don't know if it is a Euro V USA thing.
