Arrow Does anyone have the ignition timing curve for a 90-92 500SL?

I have a couple weeks before I get my hydraulic top cylinder seals from the manufacturer.

MSD and Crane have electronic timing advance/retard on some distributors and some ignition boxes, a few boxes can be connected to knock sensors, tach, fuel inj rpm input etc.

I found a small 8 cyl distributor that I can machine adapters to drive off the cam and one to bolt to the head.

Now I need to find a chart with timing specs from idle to red line.

Consider simply replacing the ignition function (and only the ignition function) of the EZL (ignition amplifier/retarder) with an aftermarket device(s) of your choice. The replacement device(s) can be triggered from the OEM flywheel pickups, and a linear retard curve back to ~5BTDC @ 700RPM can be programmed. The maximum advance is determined by the relationship of the pickup coil(s) to the angular position of the flywheel segments. As the EZL has a number of functions other than ignition it is quite likely that retaining it will be necessary.

This approach is likely to entail less work and expense than the addition of a supplemental distributor, considering that there are already two distributors in place.

The MSD 6214 is a two channel amplifier with programmable retard; uses two pickups, drives two coils.

Specs for timing are 14-18 btdc @ 600-750 rpm -the label on my car is 16.

35-39 btdc @ 3200 RPM

The specs under engine performance it's 18-22 btdc -european?

Also if the 2.4k ohm reference resistor fails the EZL retards 3 degrees @ WOT.

The same tach signal wire from the EZL goes to 1-Tach, 2-MAS 3-CIS-e.

Picked up a new electronic ignition distributor for ford flathead V8.

Upull was 50% OFF this weekend, grabbed blue grommet duraspark II ign mod (this has a built in 4 degree start retard and could be used as a knock retard), wiring and coil.

For this setup would only be used to test operation although a add on electronic advance is available - these are programmable on laptop $150-$200.

I did grab a map sensor and knock module with wiring too.

I am leaning toward a MSD or Crane ignition with electronic advance, because a knock sensor can be added.

I did win a Ebay MSD multi-step timing retard to use with knock sensor(s) and start retard.

Hopefully I will have the distributor adapter machined this week, as my manufacturer of hydraulic top seals emailed me today, they are done and being shipped from Europe.

Arrow

Removed the right distributor cap, rotor and rotor mount.

The dist. will be mounted on the left side out of the way of the fan and water when raining and the shortest length of timing chain between crank and cam.

Checked for adapters for dist. and drive, ordered aluminum plate.

I can use 3 different MSD dist caps, short, crab and ford large cap.

Also received my hydraulic top seals from the manufacturer yesterday, yippee!
