Replaced gas tank now it won't run

My gas tank cracked on my 450SL (1980) and so i had it replaced w a new tank, along with the pump, the fuel lines, spark plugs, fuel accumulator and oxygen sensor.
it still cuts out after a few blocks. this has been going on for 3 months.
my new mercedes specialist has given up and can only suggest another gas tank (he thinks the first one - fitted by a terrible local mechanic - is not good.) I cannot afford to pay $1000 for another tank replacement. anyone know what the problem might be? i would like to buy the parts myself.

I just can't see where a gas tank would cause the car not to run (unless it was empty). I'd be looking along the fuel path to the engine. The strainer would be a possibility and an air leak ahead of the pump would also be a possibility. Was the tank new or a used one? If used, maybe a clogged filter from debris in the tank. Possibly bad gas? How was the tank filled after the transplant?

A quick test would be to disconnect the fuel line at the engine and replace it with a length of PVC tubing and a bucket or a jug. Then put 12v on the pump directly and monitor how much flow you've got. It should be a good strong flow. Be careful not to spark anything and always keep a fire extinguisher handy just in case.

Good luck

You need to see if you are getting fuel at the fuel distributor. IIRC there is a strainer in the line at the engine end too. Look where it screws into the fuel distributor. Make sure that strainer gets cleaned out.

oh yea, welcome aboard.
