"86 560SL A/C R12 conversion to R134a or not?

My compressor would engage but there is not even a cool air coming through any of the vents. Also, when the compressor is OFF(engine on) still makes a very annoying squeaking sound as the clutch slips on and off.
What is your opinion - should I just get a new/rebuilt compressor and convert
the system to R134a or keep the original R12?
R12 is hard to find and very expensive too.

I would appreciate any inputs and info.
Thanks!

I have had the conversion done

and I must say the ac does not cool nearly as well.

The conversion was done properly with all new R134 compatible hoses, new expansion valve and drier as well as the compressor. I am told that a good cross-flow condensor would complete the conversion and it would work very well.

Maybe next year,

R12 is not much more than r134. Look on eBay. It's about 40$ a pound. You need about 2 lbs. the converting to r134 the right way will cost you a whole lot more.

Just change the compressor, check for leaks, and charge with r12. It's the cheapest, AND the best route.

In spite of what you may have heard, R12 is available. ( At least where I live in Wisconsin ) If all you need is the compressor, than it will cost less to replace it and recharge with R12 than going the conversion route, particularly if they need to disassemble the dash and console to get to the expansion valve.

Well...my problem is that the compressor engages when the A/C button is pushed but there is no cooling at all.Could it be the monovalve?
Is it possible to have a working compressor and pressure in the system and no cold air ?

does it have a charge? Take it to an AC guy familiar with R12 systems to diagnose, tough R/R if you know not what you do
