'91 300SL firewall pad refresh?
 

I wanted to replace or at least refresh in some way my tattered, carboard backed, firewall pad. See the pic attached. The part number is 1296820360. It's $85 and it would have to come from Germany.

1. Is there some way to improve what I already have?
2. Any other non- OEM solutions?

You might have a lot more than $ 85 worth of time / materials making a new one. However the steel firewall plate is removable making things easier.

Salvage yards would be a good place to start, I'd expect 90 to 01 to be close enough to work fine.

When ordering parts at my dealer, they don't charge any shipping for parts that come from the USA warehouse or Germany. From Germany parts usually arrive in 2 days. ( East coast )
