91 300SL windshield washer motor meltdown

Another installment of my "list of things to do"...

My windshield washer system doesn't squirt.
See the pic for at least one reason why.
The white one on the left was mounted on the fender side of the bottle, while the black one was on the grill side.

They appear to be the same motor despite the color variation- correct?

It would seem that it stayed on, like I've read in other posts, and just overheated.
Why does this happen?
How can it be avoided?

Given that I'm not married to the idea of keeping the headlight wipers, would eliminating that system and additional pump avoid what happened?
