possibly buying this 1985 380SL

So today I went to check out a 1985 Mercedes Benz 380SL Convertible. 128k on it. I know it needs work and I'm ok with that.

I just wanted to see what you guys think?
The motor runs smooth. I was able to drive it slightly... yes that lot was crappy... He wants to sell it and is asking for $1600. what do you guys think? Should I run away?

Scrap price would be 300/400 which the pics seem to indicate its value.

Welcome to the forum.

TnBob's Comments

X2.

We all like to find a good "restore".....or a car with good potential that needs some work.....etc,.... but I think the other members comments are right on for this car. Too much abuse has been piled on this one for $1600. Offer the guy $500 and plan on walking away empty handed. There are better cars out there for $1600. Be patient you'll find one.

If you're looking for a project and have the shop, tools, time, skills and desire that specimen would definitely keep you busy. Don't expect to have a show car in the end for less than you could buy a low mileage, rust free one from the Southwest. It depends on what you're looking for. Do a careful check for rust though...that would be a deal killer. I don't think he's going to get a lot of interest at that price so shoot him a lowball and be patient.

Here's one randomly selected example on CL - http://losangeles.craigslist.org/lac/cto/4844544699.html
