First R107

Bought my first R107. Just kinda popped up and I ran with it. 53k original mile 1976 cream puff.

Few things I want to take care of first but can not wait to enjoy it for what it is.

So far its been a real treat. I can not wait for summer and drop the top. I have to rebuild the intake, lot of the rubber is dried up and has small vac leaks. But other then that, runs like a top.

Isn't this one of the years the cats were in the engine compartment?

If they are next to the exhaust manifolds, sourcing a later 450SL system would be a smart move.

There were lots of problems with the 76 cars due to the very high heat load in the engine compartment the cats generated.

It is beautiful Jonathan! Enjoy her in good health! It is true about the catalytic converters in the 1975 and 1976 SLs being a tremendous heat source under the hood. That is a major reason for all the dry rubber under the hood (along with age). If the car is no longer inspected in your state, you may just want to eliminate them all together!! I'm sure there are a lot of suggestions on this topic, since R107s have always been collectable. Do some Google searching....

Someone must have yanked them from the area, no cats in the engine area. Goes from manifold, down pipes, a mini H pipe, I think a cat or res and then pipes to the muffler.
