Just replaced steering coupling - '560SL
Just completed this job and I used an alternate procedure described in another thread - I removed the 3 bolts holding the steering gear to the car and pried it back enough to remove the coupling. Went pretty well - little trouble getting it back on but mostly learning curve...
My question is this - I guess I didn't pay enough attention to the alignment of the steering wheel (which I dd NOT remove), because the wheel is off and the right hand turn signal will not cancel. Can I fix this by removing the steering wheel and reinstalling, or am I going to have to go back under and reposition the coupling? I was planning on removing the steering wheel anyway to remove the instrument cluster... Thanks, Ryan |
you could but it you will end up with a messed up turning radius. you really needed to remove steering wheel , mark the shaft remove and then put it back together. Then if your off a few teeth you can center wheel. You will now have to remove, center wheels and then hope for the best - like you said ..learning curve

I'm thinking (hoping) it might only be off a few teeth at the box - really can't be off much more than that...the shaft on the box rotated some when the box was loose from the frame, but it couldn't rotate too much (I think..).
