Need info on R129 front bumper attachment

I have a 97 SL320 Sport with the AMG front bumper ( though I expect the regular bumper to be the same for what I'm asking.) There are 2 forked tabs at the bottom of the bumper cover that sort of look like the go over metal tabs on the car. There is a chance they go under the tabs and are captured by the undertray ( that I don't have )

Any manual pics / untouched cars for reliable info? Thanks

97sl320,

I have a 98 non AMG sport version and recently removed the front bumper cover for re-painting. If memory serves me correctly, the bumper cover has two 'tangs' at the lowest level of the cover under the vehicle that extend into and are locked with plastic 'push tabs' mating the cover to the plastic skid guard (in correct terminology) that is under the engine.

Hope this helps...

Timm9, thanks, I'll have to dig up a skid guard / under tray. Next time I'm at the dealer I'll have a look through the parts listing for clips / tabs however, I've found some pictures not to show much detail and sometimes fasteners are in a generic hardware section!

97SL320,

When I reinstalled the bumper cover it was so cold that the plastic 'push pins' for lack of the appropriate term were so hard I could not get them to 'push thru' even after cheating with the microwave. I ended up using zip ties for the tab to skid plate connection.
