2001 SL500 new purchase with misfire
So I bought this car on Saturday, its in good shape inside and out. Everything is there, hardtop, manuals, some service history etc... I drove the car roughly 5 miles on the test drive and of course it ran smoothly and shifted perfectly. I buy the car, half way home, roughly 20 miles the car throws a CEL and falls on its face and its barely running. I nurse it to an autozone and throw some seafoam in and buy some MAF cleaner, car then runs ok. I buy a MAF put it in, CEL light goes away. Next day, drive from PHX-SD car runs VERY poorly most of the way home. I now am on my second tank of gas and it starts running muc h better for a short time, CEL turns back off, but short while later its back on and still runs rough. I bought the car pretty cheaply, should I just throw the kitchen sink at it? The CEL is a misfire, couple on 6-7 and couple randoms. I doubt it has had its 100k (current is 103K)
I suck at diagnosing, I always just throw parts at these cars, any help or comments are appreciated. I will post some pics soon. Car is gorgeous. |

Please post the exact codes you are getting and their descriptions ( The MB description as the generic one might not be exact enough. )

The codes WERE random misfire 0300 and misfire in cyl 6 & 7 0306 & 0307 HOWEVER after a second dose of seafoam, the car is running perfectly and the engine light went out!
I will take some pics tomorrow. : ) |

I am still suffering from random misfires. Possible that it has a non standard temp 71 C thermostat as the car came out of Phoenix. A friend scanned it with a high end diagnostic tool and saw a number of codes including one for the MAF that has since been replaced and then the misfires and engine temp. Still trying to chase it down. Installing the factory correct 87 C tomorrow.
