87 560SL cig lighter help
First, why did Mercedes put the fuse panel in the most inaccessible place in the passenger foot well?
I replaced the blown fuse #1 for the cig lighter and got 12V power at red arrow the tray with a test light to the screw for ground. But nothing to the cig lighter when the ash tray is inserted.  I get continuity with an ohmmeter from the cig lighter center electrode to the red and black arrow. Yet, the cig. lighter does not work. The wiper looks like it is extended enough and is spring loaded. I took the thing apart and the 2 spade terminals (one to cig. lighter the other to the light) are connected and tight. I pushed on the spring wiper but it did not make it stick out any further. Is this a common problem? I'm stumped!

It's been a while since I messed with the ash tray. In fact I no longer have one on my SL. Two thoughts:
Does lighter work if you apply 12V to the red/black arrow contacts? If so, maybe loosening the screws that hold the ashtray bracket, pushing bracket toward driver side and retightening screws might create better contact. I found on my 300D that the lighter connection was intermittent, so I wired in a separate 12V socket to console tray for use with portable devices.

Check the socket with ignition on. Center is positive outer shell is negative. If you get 12V there then the lighter is defective. Could be someone replaced it with a North American cigarette lighter. The MB cigar lighter is bigger. Also when trying to plug in cell phone charger etc. adapters it is common for them not to work for the same reason.

Hey rowdies, I have not been able to get my hands on the car since, maybe next weekend will do more investigation. Can you tell by looking the first pic above if a ground wiper is missing?

There is. A connection on the Bak of the radio for the cig lighter did you check that?
