brake fade

I just took my mom's 300SL for a spin and after being at the shop for THREE WEEKS to fix the AC, the steering wheel is very tight. It seems like it ais rubbing against something and there is a squeaking noise. Also this is nothing new but the brakes aren't good at all for the speeds this car can go. When stopping from 80mph the fade was very noticeable and scary at points. Thanks for any help
