r107 seat replacement
 

Hello,

Does anyone know how hard it would be to replace r107 seats with w123 or w126 seats. These seats are soooo much easier to find in our local junkyards and often in excellent condition. I am of the impression that it isnt a bolt in replacement. That said what would it actually take.

How about just seat backs. I have not looked into this much so my apologies if this seems lake a rookie question. There is a car I am looking at buying but the seats seem pretty much totally shot inside and out.

depends a bit on the year of the cars , but it is not an easy job, and it will never be right in my opinion. I have read where others have used Jag seats and the such but always with modifications. The frames break , the hinges wear out so One option is this - all seat frames ( the springs and padding) are available , get those, and have a local upholstery shop cover them for you.

another is to take one out, trace bolt pattern and see if you can find an acceptable substitute at a pic n pull

nice look !, I seem to recall seeing pictures of others that work, Our listserve should make sticky of those that work, because for most vintage SL owners - the seats are never right , despite heroic efforts. If I still owned mine, I would figured out a way to retrofit them.:rolleyes:

Thanks Panda and Mach4. Panda, I have seen that link and it is pretty informative. It may come down to that. I did some seat repair on my 300td so I understand roughly what's entailed. But on these R107 seats it seems almost everything is shot. Frames, horsehair pads, and upholstery. So the idea of finding a matching pair that would bolt in seems really attractive. Its just that I have always had an easy time finding w123 parts at the local junkyard. I usually have several to pick from. Not so much with R107s.

Mach4 thanks for your response. By the way I love that car! I have seen it on the internet before. That conversion is stellar. If I had a little more savvy, time, and space I would love to try something like that. I am first and foremost a diesel lover. Sweet ride.

The seats are pretty easy to rebuild/ refurbish. It takes a lot of time though. You could check for used seat frame parts and fix that up for the start. Everything else is pretty much easy as pie. Even if you have falling apart coco-pads they can be used and built up with spray rubber and foam. I reused my pads which were crumbling. After the many coatings of flex rubber spray I then glued foam to them and cut the shape correctly with razors, lots of them. It was very time consuming, but not hard.
