I've replaced mine. Pretty easy especially once you've done it one time.
You need to:
- pull out the Ashtray, set aside.
- x2 Phillips screws to remove the Ashtray bracket.
Tight fit but pull the right side out, then unplug wire connector, set aside.
- Pull up the electric switch for the passenger side mirror, unplug, set aside.
- x2 Phillips screws holding the wood console - part around shifter.
Carefully slide backward about 2 inches before lifting because there is a wood peg
on the back edge. Lift up the wood piece, unplug switches, set aside.
- Move shifter to Neutral position and use a wrench to loosen the top nut
at the bottom of the shifter shaft. Once loose, twist the shifter CCW and remove.

Re-install is the reverse - just make sure the Ashtray connector and the mirror
switch is accessible.

Wood, Plastic, whatever ... very easy to break off if you don't slide
the wood cover rearward

BTW rowdie is the real expert on these Mercedes. He's helped me
with many issues I have had with my SL's. If all he found
wrong with my procedure was the plastic peg, hey it must be spot on
