1979 450 SL Question (apparently #2...)
All,
I have an opportunity to purchase a 1979 450SL with 41k miles. It's been regularly used, just not much. Same owner since new, maintained by the same shop since new, and garaged since new. This doesn't guarantee all necessary work has been completed. I'm more familiar with MB diesels, so I could use some assistance on the SL stuff, especially the subframe recall (how to check) as well as other items on the car. Unfortunately, I won't have access to a lift or mechanic, but I will be driving the car and have some degree of knowledge myself. Any information would be helpful. Thanks, DSLPWR |

Call the shop and see what they can tell you about the car, any recent work, etc. Ask them if the timing chain is original . Ask them if the valve stem seals have been changed. Doesn't matter on the low mileage, 23 years will take it's toll on rubber seals. See if the head gaskets have been replaced. Has any A/C work been done recently? Focus on expensive subsytems of the car.
When you drive the car, I know it's a convertible and it's supposed to be fun, but drive with the top up (or hard top on) so that you can hear better. Check the condition of the soft top. Pay close attention to the areas between the door glass and the side plastic windows. The fabric tends to wear thin there. Check the bottom of the chrome on the boot cover. This is an area that rust tends to appear. This is just a start. If you're not familiar with the chassis, you won't know the costs of fixing/replacing things. Expect to drop $3000 in repairs in the first couple of months.
