Lack of Power 1984 380SL

My 380SL stopped running on the road. The engine would idle at 500 rpm but pressing on the accelerator had no effect. I checked the linkage and it seemed to function. I am at a lost for what might be the problem. Would a fuel pump failure cause this problem?

Harry

HY:

With an assistant to press on the pedal, follow the throttle linkage forward to the right front of the intake manifold/plenum. The throttle body and the throttle arm are somewhat obscured below the water fittings and the warm up regulator, but with a flashlight you should be able to observe movement of the throttle arm as your assistant presses and releases the pedal.

If you were having a fuel or ignition problem, I'd expect the car to stall or have some other operating problem when you pressed on the accelerator pedal. Since you're having no change, I'd strongly suspect the linkage isn't actually moving the throttle plate.

While not the exact same year, I had a similar issue with my 1982 380SL a few years back. The symptoms were virtually the same with no power or acceleration. It idled fine but throttle would not advance past a few hundred extra RPM's. I thought i was headed for Cat replacement.

It ended up being a round hard plastic 'ball' the size of a large marble which is part of the linkage that had failed but was not readily visible. it was low and towards the firewall on drivers side. The 'ball' had disintegrated allowing the linkage to completely 'miss' its connection down the line. If memory serves it was an inexpensive part but a PIA to install. Hope this helps...

There are several linkages that are hidden and there is normal "play" in these so movement can be deceiving. Recheck from pedal to throttle body. That fact that it runs and idles fine would point to that as cause

Considering that the question was Mr. Young's first and only post, we will probably never hear about him again until his skeletonized remains are found in a derelict 380 SL by the side of a road.
In an ideal world, persons asking questions like this would report back with findings and solutions. Perhaps I am asking for too much?
