Electrocuting my SL500 to keep cats off....!
Hi,
I've got a 1997 SL500 which is parked in my driveway during the day. Problem is that cats love to jump up onto it because the glass roof is nice and warm to sit on. But they've got muddy paws and they leave grit on the car, probably scratching it (although I've not noticed it yet). So it got me thinking how can I keep the pests off the vehicle. The best idea is to put a small electric shock through the car powered by a battery in my garage. I'm no expert on electrics but will the cats feel a shock if they're sitting on the roof of the car? Will the electric shock do any damage to the car's electrics? Any ideas of other ways that I can keep cats off the vehicle? Thanks for any help - sorry about a weird set of questions! |

This might attract attention, but I would just get a car cover...

A neighbor uses this product in his house. Very effective: http://www.bugspray.com/catalog/products/page1454.html

My dad told me a story about a dog that used to piss on the wheels of his model A all the time, so he took a piece of screen and parked the wheel on it and then rigged up a coil from a model T so that when the dog started to pee he touched the wires together and zap. He said the dog ran down the street howling and never did it again.
He also told me one day he had the roof down on the model A and saw a cat jump into the car so he ran over and yelled at the cat. The cat pissed all over the inside of the car. He said the smell never went away. He told me never yell at a cat when its inside the car lol |

My cats think my SL is a purfect place to lounge, too.
Although I don't recommend you do it... Per Ohms Law, you would have to get the cat to create a path to ground (the load) for any current to flow. So you could have 10,000v running to the body and the cat will just still sit there on your car and purr away. But don't then try to shoo it off unless YOU have dry, rubber boots on! |

Unfortunately this issue is complicated by the glass roof. Maybe nearer 50kV will be required as glass is a great insulator.
The problem is also compounded by the cat's ability to jump. As previously mentioned, you need the cat to bridge between the car's metal surface (sitting at high volts) and the ground and as cats may 'leap', the gap is significant. From memory I think ionisation occurs at 1kV per mm so you need to hope that the cat 'steps' onto the vehicle otherwise you're going to need some serious oil cooled HT stuff...

Search the internet for "Laser Cannons". Get at least a 5 gigajoule model so you can totally vaporize the cat. The smaller models with only melt the cat and leave a nasty mess.

There is a much more cost effective approach. As a cat lover and admirer I suggest print-free cat boots, available on the internet, just about anywhere, for about 50 cents per boot if memory serves. If the cats take the boots off, shoot them with a 12 gauge shotgun - less than a dollar a shell. They can't say you didn't give them a chance. It is, afterall, a 129 body.

electricity needs to flow, you need a connection from positive to negative for that to happen. The car is insulated from the earth by the rubber tires. The cat sitting on the car will not get a shock unless the car is charged and the cat is grounded somehow (just like birds on a wire). You would have to make a grid system of positive and negative wires (like a bug light that zaps the insects when they hit two wires).

A few ideas of mine 1-Sleep on top of your car yourself and keep anything else from getting there 2- park the car on the roof so they have to sleep on the chassis. 3-tie a dog next to the car just out of reach of the tires so he won't pee on them. If I come up with another bright idea I'll write it up on this thread.

Wax the crap out of it. The cats will avoid the car. I don't know if it is the smell or because they slide off, but it works.
