R107 Rear bumper metal material
Rear bumper R107, is the metal chrome plated or just stainless steel?
My rear bumper was PERFECT, I had the car two days and a bad driver woman rode here cheap pickup bumper over the top of my rear bumper, scratched the heck out of it. Of course she would never admit it, her being white trash. I got a used bumper pretty cheap on eBay, the stainless or chrome metal has some small tiny dents. I am hoping it is stainless as it should be easier and cheaper than getting it re-chromed. The bumper pads on the eBay are all good, gong to take the smaller bumperetts and put on the front bumper. |

What year and model?
my 72 350SL has chromed bumpers and other than some aftermarket ones, perhaps most 107s are the same? Does a magnet stick strongly to them?

US 74-89 bumpers with the rubber sides are stainless I believe.
Big US bumpers should be cheap and readily available. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

Stainless steel always has a sort of "grain" to it. True stainless steel is non-magnetic, the test is to try to stick a magnet to it. If a magnet sticks, it isn't real stainless steel.
If your bumpers are shiny and chrome looking, they're chrome plated steel. The Euro bumpers on my SL are chromed steel as are the chrome parts on my '86 SDL. Seeing as people have replaced their SL bumpers because they rusted, it only makes sense that they're chromed steel. Stainless steel doesn't rust.

The 74 and up North American bumper skins are stainless but they do have a plating of something softer. I found this out when I tried to buff out some scratches and went though the plating.

Weird thing on my 72 SL, is that one (or is it two?) of the hubcaps are magnetic, but the others are not. All stainless of some type!
