Spring Compressor / Removal for 560 SL
I am preparing to rebuild the front suspension / steering on my 560 SL and I have been researching spring removal / replacement procedures. To do things safely I want to purchase (or loan / rent) a spring compressor tool but I am not sure which one I require that works on the 560 SL. I search the internet and the popular Mercedes tool available seems to fit most Mercedes models but not the front springs on the 560 SL.
Any advice appreciated. |
Use spring tools appropriate for earlier 107s, and W114/115s.

I have one of the mercedes specific telescoping ones like this that I use https://www.ebay.com/i/122357924475?chn=ps
It works well for the 201, 202, 124, and R129 cars. The late 107s have the updated w124 type suspension and should be right in the front. When I've used it on my 74 450slc it has worked fine for me but I usually do the rear springs by compressing them against the control arm and unbolting the shock and sway bar before wigging the spring out. Alternatively you can use a jack and just make sure you run a chain or heavy rope through the spring and control arm to prevent it from escaping in case the jack slips. |

Thanks for the advice.
Seems I need special tool 107 589 3 31 00, which is the spring compressor for the 107 (pic attached.) Problem is this has a ridiculous price tag of approx $2,000!!! Maybe I could make one? Otherwise I will be using my sturdy floor jack along with ropes, chains, protective shields and whatever else I think necessary for protection! |
