You should still be able to can get a clipped head wallet key for about $ 45 This will open the door and start the car.

What broke on your fob? The metal blade or did the plastic come apart?

There are replacement cases / blank keys on E bay. You transfer the remote circuit board and the wedge shaped security chip into the new housing.

Oh, that's an easy fix.

Get a pocket from the dealer + E bay key case / flip key ( the wide one, C class and E used a narrow key ) then take the whole mess to a locksmith and have then cut the e bay blank using the pocket key as a pattern. They also might have a flip key blank saving you from getting a e bay unit.

The metal key comes out of the flip hinge by removing the small roll pin.

key fob

I got the new key blank but the dealer says I need the chip which isn't working. They are telling me I have to order a whole new key but Mercedes isn't shipping them at this time they are on back order.I have a car that is useless.I will never buy another Mercedes vehicle

Lets take this one bit at a time, read carefully and please give me very specific answers as you are all over the place with this. Solving this is a _NON_ issue that you are turning into a big deal then placing blame on others.

What is back ordered, the complete flip key or the clipped head pocked key?

The key blank you got, is this to replace the one in the flip key or is this a clipped head pocket key that the dealer sent away for after taking your VIN and ownership information?

The "chip" is in the flip key housing. If you change the metal blade, the chip will still work. If the plastic housing fell apart, Google PCF7935 and look to see if this is laying around somewhere. This is the RFID "chip" required to trigger the anti theft, it is about 3/8" long and 3/16" tall / thick .

If you got a clipped head pocket key _PROGRAMMED SPECIFIC TO YOUR VIN_ , it will work right away.

If this is a clipped head pocket key that wasn't _PROGRAMMED SPECIFIC TO YOUR VIN_ , putting the old flip key next to the new key while cranking will run the car. If this is the case, get another ignition antenna ring ( same as similar year S, C and E class + probably more ) , tape the flip key ( or just the chip ) inside the antenna, plug it into the DAS box ( left under dash, follow the wire from the existing antenna ring. this will now run the car.

Let me try and explain every dealer in the usa does not have a key for the 1997 and newer r129 Mercedes sl. They are on back ordered from the factory and no one knows if they will have them again. This is not as easy as going to a locksmith and having a new key made.I have tried that a few times the dealers all say they are sorry but have to wait on Mercedes.this sucks. no more Mercedes for me that's for sure

Why do you refuse to try to get a clipped head pocket key? This will open the drivers door and start / run the car. Last I checked they were $ 45.

I got mine at the MB dealer. They will need proof of ownership and will send to the parts depot to have it made. ( Mine came from TX last time I ordered. )

All of the assumes ( even for a flip key ) that no one changed the locks , DAS box and engine computer. In this case the MB data won't match. There are still ways around this.
