89 560SL Noise
I started my 87 560SL today and heard a rapid click click noise at the front of the engine first & THEN a click every 5-10 seconds thereafter (even after the engine got hot). It did not sound like the timing chain rattle I have heard, but wondering if it could indeed be the chain. I guess I am asking if it was the chain, would I continue to hear the click noise every 5-10 seconds even with the engine running until hot. It seemed to get less noticeable as the engine got hotter and hotter. Also, when I rev the engine, the clicking noise increases in sequence.
Any help would be great. Richard |

I would be very concerned until I ruled out timing chain/tensioner issues, then a little concerned afterward until I discovered the source.
If the car has well over 100k miles and the chain has never been renewed, it is due. You can easily remove one of your valve covers to inspect the chain and at least one of the upper guides. Have a new gasket in hand. If the chain is the source, stop driving it until it and the upper guides are replaced. Otherwise, remove your drive belts and start it one at a time to try to isolate the source to one of the accessories (alternator, ac compressor, water pump etc.). |

Good advice I wouldn't ignore.

Check the whole chain by bumping it over. A broken link can make that noise.
