SL (model R129) ownership

With the recent changes to company car tax in the UK I'm thinking of giving up the Mondeo and buying my own R129 SL. A 1990/91 300SL-24 sells for £16 - £18k at the moment, which compares with the price of a new Mondeo.
Can anyone give me some advice on owning this particular model, especially with regard to high mileages (I cover 20-25,000 miles a year)? Am I commiting motoring suicide buying such a car, or are they like W124 taxis - good for half-a-million miles without so much as a set of spark plugs?

I don't think this is a good idea, especially considering the car you get will probably have 60 to 100 kmiles already. This would not make a sensible daily driver with this kind of mileage you plan to do. Alot of this car's parts are unique and very costly!

I agree...

...these cars are reliable, but truthfully most owners treat them as pampered daily drivers or weekend-only cruisers.

And yeah, even if the car holds up to rigorous high-mileage usage, replacement parts are not cheap, and serviceability is much more difficult considering the limited space in the various compartments throughout the chassis.

There are far more serviceable MB models to choose from to serve that kind of duty.

I disagree with the the above. I'm running a '90 500SL since last November and the mechanicals are unburstable. But watch out for water ingress. Mine is outdoors all the time in Irish weather. The electrics don't like that. But it's so much fun I will persevere!!

I stand corrected...

...good to know that the R129 can stand up to heavy use.

Ours however will still be a "creampuff"...we use the W124 for the daily grind...

I use my 1990 500SL for daily use/abuse and it has never missed a trick. Here in Arizona we have 330 days of sunshine a year and this is definitely the car to own. I currently have 142,000 miles on the odo. The car was recently driven by a regional MB zone rep and he commented how well it has held up, of course with normal maintenance and repairs when necessary. On the whole it is quite trouble-free.
