unleaded or leaded gasoline
Im going to receive a gray market 75 280 SL from a family member. I don't know whether is takes unleaded or leaded gasoline. From what I can gather it needs a octane level of 98 or higher. its this correct. I don't want to ruin the engine with our low levels of octane fuel. Help me.

Does it have a catalytic converter? If so you need to run unleaded.

unleaded or leaded gasoline
No my car doesn't have a catalyic converter, I thought it would. so do I put in ultra gasoline and add a softner to the tank. I heard that unleaded gas will ruin the engine over time. I need to add something to it...help. I get the car on Tuesday.

Leaded fuel contains lead of course, and it served as a sort of lubricant for the soft valve and valve seat metallic compounds used in cars of that era. Cars that burn unleaded fuel are equipped with harder valves and valve seats.
When I rebuilt my VW motor, I put stainless steel valves and titanium valve seats (standard kit) in order to burn unleaded fuel. You may have to shop around and see if there is that type of upgrade kit for your motor. Otherwise, the real effect of prolonged use of unleaded fuel is premature valve and valve seat wear...
