Small "leveling thing" inside headlight reflector w/ factory HID?

Found that my '99 SL500 with HID has got some small thing that looks like a leveling device (?) inside the headlights, down in one corner of the high beam reflector. Any idea what this is? It appears to be only on US model cars, as European headlights I find in pics online doesn't have this thing. I'm not talking about the motor on the rear of the reflector, but this thing sticking out of the reflector towards the lens.

That's probably the vertical adjustment so the physical headlight is near the middle of the adjuster range.

There is a procedure for aiming these headlights, I don't know where I put the file. Pretty much the notch at the top of beam pattern is what you use for a reference point.

I do know that a 96 USA car does not have elevation motors, I removed a headlight from one and the car didn't have a motor or front / rear height sensors.

My 97 has motors / height sensors. The front attaches to the center if the swat bar and the rear to a lower control arm.
